challenge
The goal of our project was to replace the legacy system components with more lightweight, transparent, modern frameworks (moreover, that are future-proof and easily scalable). The end user should receive a seamless, fast, and uninterrupted checkout experience.
It would be unfair (and perhaps facetious) to characterize the project as a theme swap, as it was a full-fledged architectural reboot – a redesign of the structure of global, multilingual, multi-storefronts. It was developed to counteract performance slowdowns, essentially at the most critical stage – the checkout.
We took on the following interconnected challenges:
- Architectural Refactoring: A complete migration from the legacy Luma stack (LESS, RequireJS, Knockout.js) to Hyvä's modern framework of Tailwind CSS and Alpine.js. The transition from Luna to Hyva required a great deal of attention – no room for error when migrating live D2C storefronts.
- Ecosystem Compatibility: Compatibility is one of the cornerstones of migrating large legacy projects. It's essential to consider all components, including the compatibility of all third-party services, of which there are dozens, if not hundreds.
- Zero-Disruption Rollout: The business imperative demands a flawless launch. To mitigate risk, we engineered a phased rollout tactics to launch a new system, literally on the fly, without breaking anything.
Solution
As part of this partnership, Grinteq introduced our experienced Magento 2 expert, skilled in complex integrations. The project team developed a phased, step-by-step plan for migrating the checkout to the Hyvä theme.
- Architecture Audit and Planning. We analyzed the entire checkout (literally, almost the entire frontend) to ensure every detail was covered: from business logic to custom implementation, from default functionality to any extension or module. This allowed us to have a clear, detailed plan for the compatibility of all components, and to collaborate more effectively and articulate our specific needs to Hyvä.
- Backend-Driven Checkout Refactoring: The technical core of the project itself – the implementation of the Hyvä checkout using Magewire. Thanks to our expertise, we moved all the heavy-duty math and unnecessary operational overhead to its proper place – the backend. Metaphorically, we replaced the old, rusty calculator (Knockout.js) with a fast and lightweight control panel (Alpine.js). This way, the user stays on one screen and doesn't have to puzzle over what should be processed on the business logic side.
- Development & Testing: We created a special sandbox and repeatedly tested various user experiences. Grinteq integrated the most critical payment systems (PayPal, Stripe, Square), migrated and tested all promo rules and user flows.
- Launch and Optimization: Our expert developed a step-by-step, phased strategy for launching the renovated, updated websitesdeploying them gradually, in clearly defined phases.
Impact
After the launch, the project team measured performance in real time based on real data, conducting A/B tests to hone the flawless user experience. The new storefronts demonstrated excellent results, with the Hyvä Checkout loading up to 10 times faster on mobile devices. The checkout migration essentially revitalized the deteriorating legacy system, significantly improving conversion rates.
