In this competitive landscape, strong differentiation is vital to combat margin pressure.

Project brief

Selling electrical components online is challenging, to say the least. Picture this: 4,000 highly complex electrical appliances, visually almost indistinguishable, yet each a needle in a haystack that customers must find. As a leading switch distributor in Australia and New Zealand, our client couldn't afford to lose sales because of clunky navigation, a frustrating user experience, or low-resolution images.

Recognizing Grinteq's established expertise in both Shopify solutions, UI/UX, and the vehicle automotive sector, Switch Boss engaged us for assistance. Our mission: to redesign Switch Boss's Shopify-powered store, modernizing its appearance, and enhancing the user experience.

challenge

Switch Boss's online store was not fully meeting the company's goals for user experience. The existing theme required significant developer time for updates. This resulted in slower performance, reduced flexibility, and challenges in scaling the site.

It quickly became clear that simply adapting the existing theme to the new branding wouldn't be enough. Although based on a pre-built Shopify theme, the final design was fully customized to achieve the desired aesthetic and user experience, with no original styling or layout remaining.

Grinteq addressed the following key areas for improvement:

Design Modernization: To move beyond the generic look of the original Shopify theme and create a more engaging customer experience.

UX Optimization: To prioritize a clear hierarchy - curated intermediary categories and a logical taxonomy to simplify main navigation.

UI Concept and Visual Enhancement: To improve the quality and appeal of all product images.

Technically, this involved a redesign of three key pages: 

  • Homepage; 
  • Collection (category) page; 
  • Product (product detail) page.

Shopify Theme Customization

Leveraged the existing theme as a foundation, our team implemented targeted frontend customizations to align with the brand identity and enhance functional versatility.

Homepage Redesign: Grinteq prioritized visual impact and intuitive navigation to reduce bounce rates, restructuring layouts, integrating high-quality imagery, redesigning collection page links, and updating hero banners. Key improvements:

  • Redesigned collection page image-links for engagement (online buyers often miss 40% of a site’s products; we prioritized prominent category displays on the homepage to clarify offerings at a glance);
  • Updated carousel.

Collection and Product Pages: Streamlined information hierarchy and optimized whitespace for enhanced scannability on collection pages. Elevated product discoverability and buyer confidence through targeted metadata integration and detailed technical attributes.

Impact

In a compressed timeframe (less than 30 days), Gritneq engineered exceptional gains across core performance metrics (36ms - INP, 0.3s - TTFB) and reduced bounce rates. Visual and functional customizations delivered brand cohesion, while smart content placement kept users engaged and ready to convert.
